John Wheatley enlisted on the 18th November 1916 at Blackboy Hill Camp, Western Australia. He was employed as a bricklayer, and had been apprenticed for seven years to Dickinson's of Derby. He stated his next of kin as his father, Edward Wheatley, of 8, Moor End, Spondon, Derbyshire. He had previously served for three years with the Royal Army Medical Corps in England, and for one week in the Western Australian Citizen Forces.
Five feet five six a half inches tall, he weighed 140 pounds, had a fresh complexion, brown eyes and dark hair, and belonged to the Church of England. He had a scar on his left foot.

John is also commemorated on the Western Australia state memorial in King's Park, Perth (the full list of names, as shown below right) is in the crypt beneath the main memorial.
